I. Example #1: Israel’s Rejection of God’s Decrees

Jude 5 – “Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.”

John 8:56 – “Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.”

II. Example #2: The Angels’ Rebellion Against God’s Design

Jude 6 – “And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day…”

Genesis 6:1-4 – “When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. 3 Then the LORD said, ‘My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.’ 4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.”

2 Peter 3:18-20 – “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which he [Jesus] went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, 20 because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water.”

Angels were designed to:

• Worship God (Is. 6:1-3; Rev. 4:8)

• Obey God (Ps. 103:20)

• Communicate the messages of God (Dan. 8:15-17; Lk. 1:11-20, 26-38)

III. Example #3: Humanity’s Rebellion Against God’s Design

Jude 7 – “…just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.”

Genesis 19:4-5 – “But before they laid down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house. 5 And they called to Lot, ‘Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.’”

Genesis 19:7 – “I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly.”

Genesis 19:9 – “Now we will deal worse with you than with them.”

Genesis 19:13 – “For we are about to destroy this place, because the outcry against its people has become great before the LORD, and the LORD has sent us to destroy it.”

Genesis 19:24-25 – “Then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the LORD out of heaven. 25 And he overthrew those cities and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.”
