Why We Worship God

Q: Why do you worship God?
Jude gives us reasons all throughout the letter:

Jude 3a – “I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation.”

Jude 3b – “…contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.”

Jude 17 – “Remember the predictions of the apostles.”

Jude 20 – “Build one another up in our most holy faith” and “pray in the Holy Spirit.”

Jude 21 – “Keep ourselves in the love of God” and “wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.”

Jude 22 – “Have mercy on those who doubt.”

Jude 23 – “Save others by snatching them out of the fire.”
I. We Worship God in Response to What He Does
Jude 24 –
“Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy.”
These verses (Jude 24–25) form a doxology (Gk. δόξα, doxa – magnificence, honor, praise).
Other NT doxologies: Romans 16:25–27; Ephesians 3:20–21; 2 Peter 3:18
a. He is able to keep you from stumbling

Gk. ἄπταιστος (aptaistos) – “free from moral failure”

Truth: You are incapable of preventing moral failure apart from the work of God.

Jude 1 – “To those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ.”

Jude 21 – “Keep yourselves in the love of God.”

Jude 24 – “To Him who is able to keep you from stumbling.”
Proverbs 24:16 – “For the righteous falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity.”

b. He is able to present you blameless in His glory

Hebrews 9:27; Exodus 33:20 – none can stand before God apart from His provision.

2 Corinthians 5:21 – He imputes His righteousness to us.

Romans 6:23 – The gift of God is eternal life.
“Blameless” – He has taken our sin, given us His righteousness.
“With great joy” – We stand before God without fear.
II. We Worship God in Response to Who He Is
Jude 25 –
“To the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.”
a. God is One

Deuteronomy 6:4 – “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.”

Nicene Creed – “We believe in one God.”
b. God is Three

Isaiah 42:8 – God shares His glory with no other.

John 17:4–5 – The Son shared glory with the Father before creation.
c. God is Savior

Isaiah 43:11 – “Besides me there is no savior.”

Psalm 118:25; 2 Samuel 22:3 – God saves His people.

Titus 2:13 – “Our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.”
d. God is Lord

“Lord,” Gk. κύριος (kyrios) – master.
We ascribe to Him:

Glory and majesty

Dominion and authority

“Dominion,” Gk. κράτος (kratos) – strength, divine omnipotence

“Authority,” Gk. ἐξουσία (exousia) – power, rule, ability
Colossians 1:16 – All things were created through Him and for Him.
Q: Why do you worship God?
Because of what He does and who He is.
Communion

This is a practice for believers (1 Corinthians 11:18, 33)

This is a practice that demands self-examination (1 Corinthians 11:27–29)
a. The Bread
1 Corinthians 11:23–24 – “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
You may eat.
b. The Cup
1 Corinthians 11:25–26 – “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
