Hebrews 10:19-25

[19] Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, [20] by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, [21] and since we have a great priest over the house of God, [22] let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. [23] Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. [24] And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, [25] not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

What is the Christian life?

I. A CONFIDENT LIFE

Hebrews 10:19-21 – “Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God.”

“Confidence,” παρρησία (parrēsia),  “to speak freely”

Your confidence is grounded in objectivity, not subjectivity.

II. A CLEANSED LIFE

Hebrews 10:22 – “…let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.”

III. A CONFESSIONAL LIFE

Hebrews 10:23 – “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.”

“Confession,” ὁμολογία (homologia), “to give assent, or profess”

Nicene Creed

“We believe in one God: the Father; Ruler of all, Maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.”

“We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, who was begotten from the Father before all the ages, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, one essence with the Father; through whom all things came into existence.”

“We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Life-giver; who is proceeding from the Father [and the Son], who with the Father and the Son is together worshipped and is together glorified.”

“We believe in one, holy, universal, and apostolic church.”

Matthew 22:37-38 – “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment.”

“Confession of hope” > FUTURE

IV. A COMMUNAL LIFE

Hebrews 10:24-25 – “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

  1. We gather with one another
  2. We encourage one another
  3. We prepare one another

“Day” > “The Day of the LORD”
